SC to Chattisgarh govt: Explain Koya Commando

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Chhattisgarh government to explain as to under what rule it has created an armed group of special police officers - Koya Commando - as an anti-Naxal vigilance group. A bench of justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar asked the state government to file an affidavit on the raising of Koya commando and also state under what rule they are being supplied arms and ammunition.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction of actress Monika Bedi, girlfriend of underworld don Abu Salem, in the fake passport case, but reduced her sentence to the period of jail term she had already undergone. In a major setback to former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, the Supreme Court on Friday declined to stay the trial against her in a 14-year-old disproportionate assets case being heard in Karnataka. A bench headed by Justice B Sudershan Reddy, however, directed the trial court to fix a time-frame for cross examination of the 42 witnesses after giving sufficient opportunity to Jayalalithaa. The apex court passed the order by dismissing the Special Leave Petition.
